I wanted to decrease my family's carbon footprint with household items, so I inquired from my facebook friends list and realized I didn’t know anyone who made their own soap amongst other homemade products. With this, I decided to look up videos of how we could make soap and stumbled upon tons of options and immediately decided to go the cold process route. So I bought my materials and impatiently waited while watching tons more! I read about the process and made sure I had my first recipe fool proof! Sure enough the first recipe went wonderful and we couldn’t WAIT to use it! I fell in love with the natural scent of the oils, with the smooth brown color of the soaphenge bar, topped with the satisfaction I received from knowing I was making a skin-loving organic product for my family. The cherry on top was they were as excited as I was to use it! We tucked all our “store bought” soaps under the sink and only use what we make here at home together. My daughter asked, “When I grow up and have kids, can we teach them how to make soap too? This can be our family tradition and I can let them know that it started with you and papi!” Proudly I agreed and understood this tradition begins right now, and what a wonderful journey we have ahead. -Chenise
Each soap loaf requires exact percentages of oil, lye and water. The chemistry of the ingredients has to be on point. There's no “eye-balling” when it comes to cold process soap. This process begins with a purpose… is it summer and people are sweating? If so, they are in need of a cleansing bar… OR Is it winter and people are feeling dry? Then a moisturizing bar is in demand. This determines the formula of base oils, essential oils and natural additives of the batch. Next comes my favorite part! The science project of mixing and molding the soap. The molded soap sits for 24-48 hours before taken out from the mold and cut into slices. After being marveled at, the soap sits in a customized dehumidifying cabinet that Javier made himself for four to six weeks. We weigh the soap periodically to monitor the water weight loss. Once the bar has cured, get ready for the fun because it's ready to use and abuse!
